Wycliffe Gordon
– Georgia
Trombonist Wycliffe Gordon is one of the top jazz trombonists working today.
His jaw-dropping technique shows a mastery of not just the traditional trombone "slide and plunge," but he can also make his horn sing, scat, and cry like almost no one before him.
He caught the attention of Wynton Marsalis when the trumpet legend visited Florida A&M University when Wycliffe was a student there. Wynton first recruited Gordon to his Septet, then invited him to join the prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in 1989. The rest is history.
He has performed or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Flanagan, Shirley Horn, Branford Marsalis, and Joe Henderson, to name a few.
Over the years, Wycliffe has also become an accomplished trumpet player and vocalist, with an uncanny ability to sing like Louis Armstrong.
Wycliffe is also a passionate advocate for music education.
Not to be missed.
